Traditional AgriChar Winter Meetings 2025 and Happy New Year!

In the end of December, we held the traditional series of Winter Meetings of AgriChar research group where group members were sharing updates from their projects as well as presented first results of upcoming publications and theses. This was a nice and informal way of celebrating the success of extensive teamwork efforts throughout the year 2025. And what a year it has been!

Some highlights to point out:

  • The completion of field data collection for five of our doctoral students, Samuel Amoah, Zannatul Ferdous, Karel Bartoš, Jonna Pärssinen and Zhouyang Tian as well as three MSc students, Sofi Paatelma, Jenni Kurvonen and Tharangi Disnika from our biochar experiments!
  • Our recycling fertilizer experiments, HYKERRYS, data has been carefully scrutinized and reporting well on way, thanks Mari Unnbom and Jure Zrim!
  • Successful field campaign in the FERRO project on lake restoration and sediment recycling, including setting up a new greenhouse experiment testing different lake sediments and biochars for their P fertilizer potential as part of the doctoral project of Franco Castillo.  Here our team, lead by Dr. Olga Tammeorg, will build on our recent paper "Recycling of lake sediments as phosphorus fertilizer: Promising results from a greenhouse experiment with six different sediments" and dig deeper in mechanisms! Further, we celebrate the wrapping up of the data analysis of long-term lake sediment recycling field experiment by Kira Eskelinen, good job!
  • Completion of the internship of our dear Anna Välkki- thank you Anna for being such a sunny team member and lending your expertise to us, hope to work with you soon again!
  • And the start of several new projects that will focus on ways to sequester carbon and improve the sustainability of nutrient management  with novel methods, our doctoral researcher Jure Zrim will be in key role of these (PATH2CC, AGCLIMATE and NITROSCOPE).

Thanks to all for the fantastic 2025! Now, let's enjoy the holidays and let's rock in 2026! Happy New Year!
